Fiumicino Airport Transfers & Taxis

Taxis are one of the most convent ways to travel to your destination as they offer a door-to-door service with little or no waiting at the airport. Their fares are obviously more expensive than the train and bus services, but if you have lots of luggage, or are travelling with small children, paying the extra is well worth it.

At Fiumicino airport there are two taxi ranks; these are located outside of the arrival areas of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Passengers who are arriving at Terminals 2 have to walk to the taxi rank at Terminal 1, and passengers arriving at Terminal 5 will have to walk to the taxi rank at Terminal 3.

It is important to note that official taxis require a permit in Italy and the local Municipality regulates all their fares, so they cannot overcharge passengers. The official taxis are easy to spot as they are all painted white, have a 'TAXI' sign on the roof, and have a symbol of the local Municipality and licence number on the front doors. If you do not see these features and the driver claims to be a taxi, do not get in. Unofficial taxis can overcharge you, and since they are not regulated, you cannot make a claim for being overcharged.

Taxi Fares

From 1st October 2006, all taxis from the Municipality of Rome, which are going to or from the airport have fixed fares to many of the local areas. Occasionally though you may see taxis at the airport that are from the Municipality of Fiumicino. These are not bound by the fixed fare rule and best to be avoided. Fiumicino taxis use a taximeter, and under most conditions, it will cost more to reach your destination than the fixed fare, so choosing a taxi from the Municipality of Rome is more cost effective. You can spot the Municipality by looking at the logo on the front door of the taxi.

The fixed fares are currently as follows:

  • To or from Rome city centre (within the Aurelian Walls) - €48.00
  • To or from Magliana/Parco dei Medici - €30.00
  • To or from New Rome Fair - €25.00
  • To or from Ciampino airport - €50.00
  • To or from Tiburtina Station - €55.00
  • To or from Ostiense Station - €45.00
  • To or from Civitavecchia Porto - €120.00

Fares for destinations that are not covered above will be based on the taximeter, so ensure the driver starts the meter before you start your journey. Taximeter rates can become quite complicated, as there is an initial charge, which is based on the time of day, a cost per kilometre, which varies between urban and rural rides, a cost for travelling slowly or stopping in traffic, as well as additions for luggage and excess passenger numbers. The current rates are as follows:

  • Initial Rate:
    • €2.80 between 07:00 and 22:00 on a working day
    • €4.00 between 07:00 and 22:00 on a holiday
    • €5.80 between 22:00 and 07:00 on any day
  • Rate per kilometre:
    • €23.70 per hour when speeds are 20 km/h or lower
    • €0.92 per kilometre within the G.R.A (Rome ring road) when speeds are higher than 20 km/h
    • €1.52 per kilometre outside the G.R.A (Rome ring road) when speeds are higher than 20 km/h
  • €1.00 for each piece of baggage exceeding 35x25x50 cm
  • €1.00 supplement for each passenger after the fourth

Based on these rates, it will cost a minimum of €42.00 to reach the city centre in normal working hours, but in reality, when you factor in traffic and luggage, you would expect to pay in the region of €50.00 to €55.00.

Private Transfers

Another similar form of transport is from specialist transfer companies such as Shuttle Direct. Companies like these offer a door-to-door service similar to taxis but offer a VIP treatment. A private driver can be waiting for you in the arrivals halls, carry your luggage to a private vehicle and then drive you to your destination in a vehicle of your choice.

This type of service is ideally suited for customers who wish to travel is a more luxurious vehicle such as BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-class, Mercedes-Benz V-class or Audi A8. It is also ideal for large groups who require a small mini bus. Rates are comparable to taxis and are fixed and paid online in advance. You can get a quote for this type of service by completing the form below or visiting Shuttle Direct directly at www.shuttledirect.com.
